![]() Leading to the 2015 Heritage Open Days I have been recently involved with some colleagues in documenting by photography some of the design, space and history of this wonderful grade 1 listed theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne. A small exhibition of our images will be on display for the Heritage Open days in September and remain with the theatre therafter. The theatre has some of the best acoustics in Europe, acclaimed by Placido Domingo as just as good as La Scala. Currently about to undergo some redevelopment it is a gem of Victorian design, with its wooden stage machinery some original and some restored after a fire. You can see the winches and manual contraptions eg the "demon" trap which lifts the actors up through the stage floor. The auditorium is adorned with the most wonderful Venetian plasterwork, light sconces and gilded figures. Its stage in the late 1890's was graced by the "Divine" Sarah Bernhardt, the subject and patron of Mucha's famous artwork. It was a privilege to have been allowed to roam the theatre, a new treasure at every turn and just as much so to engage with the people who keep it alive for us. Here are just a few glimpses.... |
